President’s Message

Welcome to and thanks for visiting the website for the Junior League of Jackson County (JLOJC).

I have a favorite quote: “If nothing ever changed there’d be no butterflies.” This reminds me of the JLOJC’s vision statement, which is “Catalyst for community change through effective leadership, volunteerism, and education.” JLOJC has been able to help facilitate quite a bit of change since it was founded as the Junior Service League in 1947 and became part of the Association of Junior Leagues International in 1995. Over the years, JLOJC has raised money via its annual Autism Ball; helped the Family Nurturing Center open its doors; helped furnish the Magdalene Home; and helped the Children’s Advocacy Center with its operating costs.

JLOJC has also conducted many great outreach projects over the years. One of them is the Project Care Package project, which provides children entering the foster care system with a backpack or diaper bag filled with hygiene items, books, snacks, a blanket, school supplies or diapers, and a stuffed animal. Typically one or more similar activities, otherwise known as Done-In-A-Day activities, are performed each month between the months of September and June.

I’m proud to report that this year JLOJC is building the foundation for a new signature project called Friday’s Backpacks. This program will be launched with a small group of children who receive meal assistance from their school and need nutritional assistance to sustain them over the weekend. The backpack will be filled with dinners, lunches, and snacks for the child. It is hoped that this project will not only alleviate hunger, but also improve the child’s ability to learn and improve their test scores.

As you can see, JLOJC is a dedicated group of women who care about the welfare of women and children in Jackson County. Please contact us if you would like to help us with any of our projects, participate in Done-In-A-Day activities, or would like to join JLOJC.

Mother Teresa once said, “What I do you cannot do; but what you do, I cannot do. The needs are great, and none of us, including me, do great things. But we can do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.”

Have a wonderful day.

Chantel Ponts

2011-2012 Junior League of Jackson County President
